for a detailed overview of manuscript preparation, including general
policies, disclosure of competing interests, the review process, types of manuscripts published, and guidelines
for preparing tables and figures.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Manuscripts may be submitted via e-mail
attachment to kmoeller@psych.org.
Please indicate that the attachment is a manuscript intended for publication
in FOCUS. For manuscripts submitted by regular mail, three copies
of the manuscript and a computer disk containing the manuscript should
be submitted to Deborah J. Hales, M.D., Co-Editor, FOCUS: Journal of
Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry, 1000 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 1825,
Arlington, Va. 22209-3901; (703) 907-7300. A notation on the disk should
specify the file name, word processing software, and the type of computer
used. Papers should be accompanied by a cover letter indicating that the
paper is intended for publication.
AUTHORSHIP, DISCLOSURE, AND COPYRIGHT TRANSFER
Review the FOCUS Guidelines for Authors on Preparing Manuscripts for details on authorship, disclosure, and copyright transfer.
PUBLIC ACCESS POLICY
Broad access to the research literature and the rights of our authors
are important to American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. (APPI), the publisher
of FOCUS. Read our public
access policy for guidelines on deposit mandates for research funded
by NIH and others and institutional repositories.
NIH-Funded Research
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revised Policy on Enhancing Public
Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded Research (Public
Access Policy), which took effect on April 7, 2008, requires all investigators
funded by the NIH to submit or have submitted for them their final peer-reviewed
manuscript upon acceptance for publication to the National Library of
Medicine’s (NLM) PubMed
Central (PMC) to be made publicly available no later than 12 months
after the official date of publication. APPI acknowledges that the Author
retains the right to provide a copy of the manuscript to the NIH upon
acceptance for publication (i.e., after all modifications from the peer
review process but before copyediting, formatting, and production work
performed to produce the final published article) for public archiving
in PubMed Central. Except for special circumstances in which specific
arrangements have been made, APPI does not deposit manuscripts on
behalf of authors. The NIH has developed a password-protected, web-based
NIH
Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system to implement the NIH Public Access
Policy.

for research funded by NIH and other funders.

Reviewers
BECOMING A REVIEWER
Individuals interested in reviewing for FOCUS should contact
the Editorial Officepsjournal{at}psych.org.
Abstracts of articles within a reviewer’s
given area of expertise are sent via e-mail to the reviewer. Reviewers are asked to complete the review within three weeks.
COMPETING INTERESTS
Most competing interests, financial or otherwise, do not disqualify a reviewer
from participating in the peer review process, but the journal requests
that reviewers indicate any conflict they may have in reviewing a particular
manuscript. Reviewers who have a competing interest can decline to review and inform the Editorial Officepsjournal{at}psych.org. Reviewer status is not affected in any way.
CONFIDENTIALITY
FOCUS uses a double-blind review.
In submitting their manuscripts for review, authors entrust the journal
with the results of their scientific work and creative effort, on which
their reputation and career may depend. Authors’ rights may be violated
by disclosure of the confidential details of the review of their manuscript.
Reviewers should never copy, share, or discuss a manuscript under review
or the data reported in it with anyone without written permission of
the journal’s Editor and the authors.
