The treatment of insomnia has been a long-standing source of anxiety and discomfort for psychiatrists. Efforts to provide appropriate treatment are complicated by uncertainty as to whether insomnia is a symptom of another psychiatric disorder or a disorder unto itself. The question of what is appropriate therapy is also troublesome to psychiatrists. Is a behavioral approach better than pharmacological therapy; if a medication is to be given, what agents are most appropriate to promote sleep with greatest efficacy and lowest risk?
